When hosting services on-site, such as E-mail or Web servers, it's important to ensure near 100% uptime. Often these services can be offline due to link failure or if there is insufficient bandwidth to deal with requests. E-mail and Web servers are often core to enterprises' operations and can cause major issue should they fail.
Usually businesses opt to host these services at their own premises rather than outsourcing to ISP's or hosting companies. This has the benefit of being much more cost effective, however this invariably means the lack of a redundant infrastructure that all ISP's provide.
With an Inbound Load Balancing solution, the Xrio UBM has the ability to control these hosted services by handling the organisation’s DNS service. The Load Balancing function becomes authoritative for their DNS domain(s) and clients requests to hosted services are distributed across available links according to current load and link status.
Implementing Inbound Load balancing also allows you to create link pools and assign these to domain names, and is possible to completely control how traffic is distributed. The DNS server replies to client requests with a very low time-to-live (TTL) value, thus they are not cached by DNS servers.
Two or more ISP links are connected into the UBM. Inbound Load balancing is achieved through distributing data packets over multiple links instead of one to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. Should a link fail, the DNS server will hold off from directing clients down this link until it becomes fully functional.
